– Have you heard about the latest ceramic treatments that are excellent for maintaining oral health?

<If you prefer English>

Hello everyone! My name is Masahiro Matsumoto, Director of Fukaya Yume Dental Clinic, a dentist in Fukaya City.

Through this blog, I will share with you stories that will be useful for your oral health. I hope you will check it out and find it as helpful as possible. This time, I would like to talk about “What is ceramic treatment that is harmless to the human body? I would like to talk about this topic.

What is the remarkable ceramic treatment that has great health benefits?Have you ever heard of ceramic treatment? Recently, it has become known that maintaining good oral health leads to the prevention of various diseases, and many dental clinics are beginning to offer ceramic treatment, which is highly beneficial from a health perspective. However, it is still not well known to the general public, and we are introducing it to our patients who visit our clinic. In this blog, we will introduce the advantages and disadvantages of ceramic treatment.

What are the characteristics of ceramic materials?
Ceramic is a familiar material in our daily lives. Ceramic is easy to understand when you think of ceramics, but it can produce a white, translucent texture that is very difficult to distinguish from natural teeth. Ceramic is actually used for kitchen knives, and is also utilized for artificial joints as a harmless material for the human body in addition to teeth.

What is the difference from conventional treatment methods?
What are the differences between ceramic treatment utilizing these materials compared to conventional treatment methods? The following is an explanation of the following. The so-called silver tooth treatment that was common in the past used a metal called palladium. However, the silver teeth are visible when you open your mouth, which gives you a complex, and the metal ions contained in the silver teeth dissolve in your mouth, causing health risks such as metal allergy symptoms. The use of this technique is becoming less common. Compared to treatment using silver teeth, ceramic treatment is attracting attention as an excellent treatment that can achieve the same color and texture as natural teeth aesthetically, and can eliminate the appearance complex caused by silver teeth by replacing them.

Advantages and disadvantages of ceramic treatment
Here, we will explain the advantages and disadvantages of ceramic treatment in an easy-to-understand manner.

Advantage 1:  Extremely high aesthetics
Again, one of the strengths of ceramics is that they are so highly esthetic that they are indistinguishable from natural teeth. Some prosthetics prioritize strength and use metal on the back of the prosthesis with ceramic baked onto the surface, but this does not reproduce a sense of transparency, and the appearance is inferior. The all-ceramic restorations that we offer can be made without using metal, while maintaining the esthetic aspect of the restoration. Please contact us for more information.

Advantage 2: Less susceptible to deterioration and long-lasting
White coverings, such as those used by insurance, are made of plastic materials, which deteriorate over time and are more likely to become stained or damaged. Ceramic is a material that is resistant to staining, and is strong enough to resist pigmentation and breakage.

Advantage 3: No possibility of metal allergies and can be used by anyone.
Because no metal is utilized at all, anyone can use the treatment without any health risks.

Now, let’s make sure we understand the disadvantages.

Disadvantage 1: It is a free treatment that is not covered by insurance.
Since the treatment is not covered by insurance, all costs are to be borne by the patient. Therefore, it is more expensive than insurance treatment. This may differ in price and payment options depending on the clinic, so be sure to check.

Disadvantage 2: Burden on healthy teeth
Ceramic is harder than natural teeth, and there is a risk of wear and tear on healthy teeth. To protect your biting teeth, you can wear a night guard when you go to bed to reduce the burden.

Disadvantage 3: Requires a high level of skill on the part of the dentist.
Because of its high hardness, it requires more production skill than other materials. Since there is a possibility that the finished product will be uneven, it is important to select a dental clinic by asking about their track record and explanations in advance.

Who is a good candidate for ceramic treatment?
Now that we have discussed the features of ceramic treatment, we would like to introduce what kind of patients have actually undergone treatment.

1:  Those who place the highest priority on appearance.
This is a great match for patients who want to maintain the same appearance as their natural teeth, as silver teeth, an insurance treatment, are not as esthetic as they should be. Although some insurance treatments can be made white using plastic, they are more prone to deposits of cigarette smoke and yellowing due to tea stains, which are less likely to occur with ceramics.

2: Those who wish to keep their teeth for a long time
Treated teeth are prone to invisible gaps, where stains can accumulate, increasing the risk of recurrence of decay. Silver teeth tend to create these gaps, increasing the possibility of tooth loss due to recurrence of decay. Ceramic is a material that prevents the formation of gaps, so the risk of tooth recurrence is minimized and the teeth can be maintained for a longer period of time.

What do you think? We hope you now understand that ceramic treatment is an excellent treatment with fewer health risks than insurance treatment.
We hope that you will consider this treatment to maintain your teeth for a long time and lead a healthy life.

Sincerely yours,
Masahiro Matsumoto
